Story So Far..........

July 2008

Highlander Mountain Marathon

It proved to be a stern test of people and equipment.  The weather, especially on day two, could best be described as 'ruthless' with snow and strong winds down to sea level. Perhaps the course on the second day could also have been shorter (note to diary).
Despite being out for hours in harsh conditions,
 we saw
nothing but smiles on the plucky band
Smiley Ed who staggered to the finish. Gilly staggers
Dance the night away

Once again the celeidh proved a great success, with one pair of lassies having the foresight to pack some lightweight dancing kit!

The in-marquee chasing start on day two added some drama to the event and may well become a permanent feature.
We would also like to congratulate Highlander winners
 Tim Higginbottom and Chris Near
who also had a superb win at this year's LAAM.
Well done lads!
The Winners

Bealach Beag 2008

The weather was as usual, a mixed bag.  Although quite benign at lower levels, the Bealach has a climate of its own and you could see 'jack' at the top.  (Thanks to Eilean Aindow for the pics)

Misty for Me Very Misty for Us I haven't the foggiest

Some of the slower finishers commented that this was a blessing!  Overall times seemed well up on previous events and incidents were few.  Some of the 'racers' at the front overcooked it on the bad corner but most were sensible in their approach to the tricky conditions.  An exception was the un-named fellow who fell and broke his arm......at the same corner where he broke his other arm last year!  (Darwin Award Winner)

As ever, many thanks must go to the marshals who gave their time and dealt with all situations with courtesy and good cheer.  We also appreciate the forbearance of the denizens of Applecross for the inevitable disruption that the event brings to their routine.

We hope that the photos from NorthSport are a fine memento of the event.  We await a video from our local cameraman Eddie and will post a link as soon as he has edited his masterpiece.

We hope to see you at our future events - they have the same fabulous scenery and good vibe!

We thank you for your support.

Mmm... The mist that had denied us the spectacular views over the east side of the island had yet again disappeared the next day to give crystal clear and stunning views towards the Applecross Peninsula which is only a few miles away as the crow flies.  Nevertheless there were big smiles on the faces of the finishers in this slightly more laid back event.  The route had plenty of delights and the light winds seemed enough to keep the midges at bay.  Lots of support from the locals once again.  Tell your friends about this little gem and we'll see you all again next year.  NorthSport already have some fabulous pics up!  Click here for the results from our in house system. Usual thanks to the small army of marshals who made the day run so smoothly.

We also gave the youngsters a chance to show their mettle.  The kid's race must have had the highest rider/support ratio in the world!

Cairngorm Classic

Well, congratulations to all who finished. It was a tough day out.

Once again the weather was a little fickle but it seemed to hold for most of the route and only at the start/finish had to endure the full brunt of a Scottish 'summer'.  It was certainly better than the day before when we were battered by wind and sleet! The final climb was hard but it did keep you warm to the finish!

Early reports suggest that you thought the routes were demanding but pretty and took even the locals up roads that they had not previously ridden. It was also apparent that the enthusiasm of the marshals and feed station teams was a real boon.  As usual, we are very grateful for the very active involvement of the local communities without which our events would not thrive.  Many thanks to Paul and his crew at Cairngorm Mountain for their support and the 'tasty treats' at the end.

Some great pics from Gordon and his colleagues at NorthSport.  The ones on the last climb reveal who was suffering and who was smiling!

Rock legend and sports presenter Dougie Vipond claimed he was tricked into riding the 100 on a 'lad's outing'  For a man who hadn't ridden more than 45 miles, he did bloody well to finish.

Whilst somewhat lost for words at the end
he soon recovered his dazzling smile
and was delighted to receive his certificate.
Look out for the telly crew at the Ullapool event!

All the certificates will be posted out this week.  Thanks for your patience-we are working to improve the system. We hope we'll see you next year.

You've done the Cairngorms the easy way - now try the hard way
Bealach Mor

Sold out in four hours!  We're looking forward to some great weather.

Etiquette for Riders

We've had reports of good and not so good behaviour from recent events.  On the one hand thanks to the riders for stopping to help with a puncture and lending a pump; on the other hand boo to those apparently riding past an injured faller.  We do not organise races!  Please consider the spirit of these events and act accordingly - that injured rider could be you!

Capability Scotland Needs You!

Capability Scotland fundraiser Helen MacGregor is very keen to sign up as many fundraising cyclists for these events as possible.   All entrants are encouraged to contact her for a fund-raising pack.

Capability Scotland supports people who are affected by disability and support can range from finding a nursery that will understand the needs of a baby with disabilities to working with families, parents and carers, enabling them to have a much-needed break from looking after their loved ones.  Capability Scotland continually campaign for real equality for people with disabilities in order to break down the barriers which many face every day:

 “ It's not about disability - it's about people”

Do You Ride a Hand Cycle?

We also aim to make our new events as inclusive as possible and are delighted to be working alongside Capability Scotland to encourage hand-cyclists to take part. Capability Scotland would like to lead the way in encouraging participation in these events by people with disabilities who often feel excluded from events such as marathons and bike rides.
